Race for Life 2010

On a typical English summer morning the ask team set out on their biggest challenge yet, with no experience, little training but bags of enthusiasm they set to conquer the Huddersfield Race for Life 5k. Prepared with a bottle of water and hardly worn bright white running trainers, this scenario was miles away from the ‘known’ – Saturday morning pot of tea and bacon butties.

Cancer Research UK is the Worlds independent Cancer charity, the work it undertakes is vital to the entire UK – and the world. With a large majority of people experiencing the horrible effects of Cancer, it’s good to know that since Race for Life started there has been encouraging leaps in knowledge, technology and support that will carry on in years to come. To date over four million women have ran, jogged or walked in order to raise money for this very important charity – It was time the ask ladies did they’re bit!

The event was situated at Huddersfield’s playing fields on Leeds road, the atmosphere electric with a slight sense of nervousness. A bizarrely long queue by a burger van – we had to pry ourselves away for a very organised warming up routine – you could spot us a mile off – co-ordination being one of the ask teams weaknesses.

We were asked whether we were Runners (definitely not!), Joggers (manageable?) or walkers (probable!). Optimism triumphed and we decided we were Joggers! We walked, knees shaking to the Joggers point and then the long walk to the Start line was upon us. All we had to do was jog 5k then bacon butty time – we could do this!

29 minutes, 40 seconds later we had made it, and to our surprise quite well! The atmosphere carrying us mostly, stopping only twice to have a little breather! Very overwhelmed, very red in the face, we smiled and then got our goody bag!

Such a good experience - roll on the Race for Life Huddersfield 10k in October! (and yes I guarantee - you will be bothered for sponsorship money!)
